{"id":18380,"date":"2019-02-09T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T08:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=18380"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:45:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:45:05","slug":"kitty-coles-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/kitty-coles-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Kitty Coles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stonecutter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What tool is best to slice the skull apart,<br \/>\nto split it neatly, cleanly as a melon,<br \/>\nand winkle out that small stone at the temple,<br \/>\ncuddled up like a frog in its deep-mud winter burrow,<br \/>\ngrowing fat as its skin sucks in the life of its host?<\/p>\n<p>What will that stone look like, held aloft<br \/>\nto the light, the air drying the ooziness from it?<br \/>\nLike nothing much: it withers like a vampire<br \/>\nwithout its sustenance, exposed and bald,<br \/>\nand corrugates with age remarkably fast.<\/p>\n<p>And neatly the scalp is sutured back together<br \/>\nand hair grows over the wound like a field of corn.<br \/>\nAnd in the warm grey fluid under the flesh<br \/>\na similar stone is busy birthing itself<br \/>\nand soon will thrive and nestle like its forbear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kitty Coles<\/strong>\u2019 poems have been widely published and have been nominated for the Forward Prize and Best of the Net.
