He can sympathise<br \/>\nand takes away the scales; desire weighs on every gram.<br \/>\nThe grocer calls, \u2018Madame?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fortunes, hemlines and breasts all rise,<br \/>\nhips sway and husbands obey. They scandalise<br \/>\ntheir neighbours but don\u2019t give a damn \u2013<br \/>\nwith the spark of an alchemist, they\u2019ve rekindled <em>la flamme<\/em><br \/>\nand blaze down the street, newly galvanised.<br \/>\nThe grocer calls, \u2018Madame?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0<em>Nicolas Flamel was an alchemist, reported to have discovered the Philosopher\u2019s Stone. His tombstone was discovered in a Parisian grocery, where it had been used as a chopping board.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>Zoe Mitchell<\/strong> is a widely-published poet whose work has been featured in a number of magazines including The Rialto, The London Magazine and The Moth. She graduated from the University of Chichester with an MA in Creative Writing and was awarded a Distinction and the Kate Betts Memorial Prize. She is currently studying for a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Chichester, examining witches in women\u2019s poetry.
