{"id":17631,"date":"2018-11-02T08:00:28","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T08:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=17631"},"modified":"2018-11-01T14:24:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T14:24:00","slug":"robert-etty-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/robert-etty-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Etty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Powerless in Town at Half-Past Nine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pharmacist in her white coat and I<br \/>\nare conducting a \u00a34.99 transaction<br \/>\nwhen the power\u2019s cut off all over town.<br \/>\nWith her cash tray exposed in the strange false dusk<br \/>\nshe fumbles me five pound coins and a penny,<br \/>\nand tells me how lucky I am.<br \/>\nI\u2019m working this out when a twilit voice calls,<br \/>\n\u2018We\u2019re so sorry &#8211; would you all leave?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As far as a shopper\u2019s eye can\u2019t see,<br \/>\nthe rest of the shops are in twilight as well.<br \/>\nShop assistants decline to assist<br \/>\nand shepherd customers back from their counters,<br \/>\napologising for being ungracious<br \/>\nas shades of Schadenfreude descend.<br \/>\nPower being granted\u2019s taken for granted,<br \/>\nacknowledged only when it won\u2019t jump at<br \/>\nthe finger snap of a switch or a socket.<br \/>\nRight now, for instance, no one can spend,<br \/>\nand purchasing\u2019s the spice of life, that gives it<br \/>\nall its flavour.\u00a0 Tills have ceased chinging,<br \/>\npurses have clamped and jaws have fallen open.<br \/>\nThe power to prevent has wielded itself<br \/>\nand preventing it wasn\u2019t an option.<br \/>\nLife\u2019s wired for such possibilities,<br \/>\nbut possible\u2019s not the same as frequent,<br \/>\nand any unlikelihood\u2019s always likely<br \/>\nif no one thinks it is.\u00a0 (The library lends books<br \/>\non chance and frequency, but its computers<br \/>\nare down.)<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 56px;\">In a flash, like a blessing,<\/span><br \/>\ndisconnections are reconnecting<br \/>\nand power surges in on a rush of current.<br \/>\nReenergised, we get back to business,<br \/>\ncontactlessly, with acceptable PINs,<br \/>\nempowered to overfill baskets and trolleys,<br \/>\nor say, \u2018It\u2019s nice, but no thank you.\u2019<br \/>\nPower plays, power points and power showers,<br \/>\nso more power once more to everyone\u2019s elbow,<br \/>\ntappable into omnipotently.<br \/>\nThe balance of power has tipped in our favour,<br \/>\nbut storing an elbowsworth might make sense,<br \/>\nin the light of the chance of a lights-out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Etty<\/strong> lives in Lincolnshire.
