{"id":17491,"date":"2018-10-04T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T08:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=17491"},"modified":"2018-10-03T11:04:19","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T11:04:19","slug":"change-for-national-poetry-day-jane-lovell-deborah-harvey-maggie-mackay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/change-for-national-poetry-day-jane-lovell-deborah-harvey-maggie-mackay\/","title":{"rendered":"Change &#8211; for National Poetry Day: Jane Lovell, Deborah Harvey, Maggie Mackay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cherry of London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if I could put myself back<br \/>\ninto that long, dark hall of coats,<br \/>\nmy hands reaching up to stroke<br \/>\nthe untouchable suede<br \/>\nwhile you laboured in the kitchen,<br \/>\nsloshing clothes in and out of the tub,<br \/>\nwashing the pans, the windows, the floor,<br \/>\ncold and pale as soap,<\/p>\n<p>if I were back there now<br \/>\nlistening for the door, knowing how<br \/>\nyour spine would curve into low flat notes<br \/>\ndrawn from a cello,<br \/>\nyour voice seep away through cracks<br \/>\nin overheard mornings,<br \/>\nknowing that your eyes would unfix<br \/>\nand soften that windswept crabapple<br \/>\nheart,<\/p>\n<p>and that, one day,<br \/>\nyour beautiful untouchable suede,<br \/>\nblazoned Cherry of London,<br \/>\nwould be hanging, still perfect, in my own<br \/>\njunkshop house, unblemished by rain<br \/>\nor breath, or fingers,<\/p>\n<p>if I could be that child again<br \/>\nand know you now,<br \/>\nwhat would I say?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jane\u00a0Lovell<\/strong> has been widely published in journals and anthologies.
