Reunion<\/span>


Darling, may you always be blessed with moderate success,<\/span>
so that when you stand for long minutes<\/span>
telling us how you became a producer at the BBC<\/span>

someone knows it was only on local radio and starts asking awkward questions \u2013 <\/span>
seems it was a \u2018one-off\u2019<\/span>
            <\/span>
and then someone else drifts over and asks straight out<\/span>
whether you think you\u2019ll ever manage to get the morning rush-hour spot back again<\/span>
now that your stint as producer is over,<\/span>
or has that bastard of a station manager kept the young fella on daytime,<\/span>
leaving you stranded on the graveyard shift \u2013<\/span>
and how are you coping, in the back-of-beyond with the sheep-shaggers?<\/span>

and someone else says \u2018Oh, aren\u2019t you in London any more?\u2019<\/span>

and you mutter \u2018no\u2019 <\/span>
and something about the West Country where they grow apples<\/span>

and someone incredibly well-meaning who is a social worker <\/span>
asks after your wife \u2013 they expect she\u2019s quite fluent in English by now<\/span>
and will have got to grips with supermarket shopping<\/span>

then the first bloke says he sees you\u2019ve drawn the short straw again,<\/span>
according to the Radio Times<\/span>, having to work over the holidays \u2013<\/span>
because it\u2019s no joke putting out a live show at 5 am on Christmas Day:<\/span>
that station manager must really have it in for you<\/span>

and after you make an excuse to leave early, <\/span>
they all wonder what I ever saw in you<\/span>
(although they used to say the opposite)<\/span>

but you put us all on Facebook first thing in the morning.<\/span>


* Bev Ellis<\/span> fled the chalk-face due to catastrophic government initiatives.  She has been writing poetry for four years and can\u2019t understand why her work is frequently assumed to have been written by a male poet; something to do with \u2018an unflinching eye\u2019 apparently.
