Maryam Gatawa, a young poet from northern Nigeria, is our Pick of the Month for August 2018 with many voters being stunned by her ‘uplifting’ ‘deep’ ‘reflective’ and ‘inspiring’ poem ‘\u2026And tell the stars’.<\/p>\n

Maryam’s works of poetry have been published in reputable journals inside Africa and overseas. She can be reached through Facebook at \u2018Maryam Gatawa\u2019 and Twitter @meegat12.<\/p>\n

She has asked that her \u00a310 ‘prize’ be donated to the Nigeria Muslim Forum UK<\/a> which raises money for education schemes and the relief of poverty.<\/p>\n

Then tell the stars
\nTo take their leave too
\nFor within our breasts
\nShines the inward light
\nTo sail us through
\nThese fields of darkness<\/p>\n

Why wait for the gardens to
\nBear you sweet roses
\nOr rent the cloaks of your hope
\nTo greedy mighty whales<\/p>\n

Go forth with your hoe
\nAnd till the fertile land
\nPlant upon its face
\nSweet corns and grapes
\nAnd \u00a0when the winter knocks in
\nTell her to stay
\nYou have enough grains in your home.<\/p>\n
