{"id":17216,"date":"2018-09-29T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T08:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=17216"},"modified":"2018-07-29T13:24:46","modified_gmt":"2018-07-29T13:24:46","slug":"mark-connors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/mark-connors\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Connors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In walks Randle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He tells me his name is R P McMurphy.<br \/>\nHe has a pleasing air of dissidence<br \/>\nbut bears no resemblance to Jack Nicholson<br \/>\nand Hollywood stars don\u2019t have Leeds accents.<br \/>\nIt didn\u2019t take him long to settle in:<br \/>\nhe pulled a pack of cards out in the day room,<br \/>\ndrew a crowd with his shuffling technique,<br \/>\ntalked four service users and a support worker<br \/>\ninto a game of Trumps after tea,<br \/>\ntook Zahid under his wing, started calling him Chief,<br \/>\ncaught the eye of his new nemesis,<br \/>\nNatalie, the not-to-be-messed-with ward manager,<br \/>\nwhile he juggled oranges throughout <em>The One Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But Zahid\u00a0 is no Chief Bromden. There\u2019s no Billy Bibbit<br \/>\nto lead astray, no Max Taber saying: <em>Play the game!<\/em><br \/>\nNo Charlie Cheswick throwing tantrums<br \/>\nbecause he can\u2019t watch his native Burnley play.<br \/>\nThis is a ward for the over 65s<br \/>\nand the basketball court is a car park.<br \/>\nEven if he did succeed in planning an escape,<br \/>\nhe could only hire a narrow boat<br \/>\nand the fish are crap in the Leeds\/Liverpool canal.<\/p>\n<p>But Randle will make the best of things,<br \/>\ntry and smuggle in a bottle or two<br \/>\nwhen he\u2019s off close obs, get a little party started.<br \/>\nHe\u2019ll try to bribe night shift staff to turn blind eyes<br \/>\nwhen his friend with benefits comes to visit<br \/>\nfrom the High rise flats of Lincoln Green.<br \/>\nHe\u2019ll order twelve pizzas in his adopted name<br \/>\njust to see if the guys at the take away fall for it.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll soon lose his spark when the drugs kick in,<br \/>\ntake part in whatever activities they throw at him,<br \/>\neat his three squares a day, leave some on his chin.<br \/>\nBut there\u2019s always a chance he\u2019ll spring back to life,<br \/>\nbounce back when the light returns to his eyes.<br \/>\nIt will take more than drugs to take McMurphy down<br \/>\nnow lobotomies are frowned upon.<br \/>\nAnd he\u2019s good for the other service users<br \/>\nof a modern day mental health unit.<br \/>\nHe\u2019ll shake things up a bit. Make an impact.<br \/>\nTake Zahid. He hasn\u2019t spoken in six weeks<br \/>\nand I just heard him say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh, Juicy fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Connors<\/strong> is a writer from Leeds.
