As we look inside<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">the moment becomes pregnant<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>EXT. A DESERT MOBILE HOME, PORCH AND SCREEN DOOR \u2013 DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NIKKI, a seven-month old wooly black poodle stands at the screen door, looking out into the yard. Her tongue hangs out and she is panting.<\/p>\n<p>TAHOMA, about 16, in a tank top and undershorts, comes up behind the dog, shoves the screen open, moves past the dog, and steps down into the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Nikki follows eagerly, jumping and mouthing Tahoma\u2019s hand as he walks over to a hose with a spray nozzle.<\/p>\n<p>Tahoma turns on the faucet and a fan of water rushes out, making rainbows in the sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">COYOTE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">the driest sand dunes<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">are in the mind (I almost<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">said in someone\u2019s heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">we roamed fearlessly back then<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">through the long cold desert nights<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He turns the spray on Nikki, who jumps and runs away, shaking her head.<br \/>\nTahoma comes closer, trapping the dog in the corner of the porch.<br \/>\nAt first, Nikki tries desperately to get away, but Tahoma blocks her path every time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">COYOTE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">love is some magic!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">hold the mother wracked with birth<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">with every action<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">comes the wondering. Did they<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">do this and the same way back then?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Nikki gives in and just stands there as the cold water hits her, drenches her thick black coat, and runs in rivulets to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Out of sight, Coyote watches.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Nikki turns her face fully into the water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">TAHOMA<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">When will you learn to<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">trust me?<\/p>\n<p>FADE OUT.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles Tarlton<\/strong> is retired from university teaching and has been writing tanka prose (and poetry more generally) full time since 2006.
