{"id":16654,"date":"2018-07-02T08:00:49","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T08:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=16654"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:34:42","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:34:42","slug":"jean-taylor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/jean-taylor\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shape of the Gap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I give you the gap in my body<br \/>\nshaped like a conference pear.<\/p>\n<p>You might keep it in a silver box<br \/>\nor else<br \/>\nin your anorak pocket<br \/>\nwrapped in a man-sized tissue.<\/p>\n<p>The surgeon who gave me the gap<br \/>\nsaid I was looking down both barrels<br \/>\nof a doubled barrelled shotgun<br \/>\nassumed it was a metaphor<br \/>\nfor bleeding to death<br \/>\na hind caught in the crosshairs<br \/>\nof a huntsman\u2019s rifle<\/p>\n<p>so I let him take my womb from my body<br \/>\nzipping my face into a smile<br \/>\nas he zipped up my abdomen<br \/>\ntooth by tooth.<\/p>\n<p>I held on to the gap<br \/>\nhugging myself from within<\/p>\n<p>but the gap has grown bigger<br \/>\nthe weight\u00a0 of its absence<br \/>\nfilled with the keening<br \/>\nof unborn children.<\/p>\n<p>I give you my gap.<\/p>\n<p>You might wrap it in a man-sized tissue<br \/>\nor else<br \/>\nplant it in the garden<br \/>\nbeside the daffodils.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Jean Taylor<\/strong> belongs to Words on Canvas \u2013 a group of writers who work in collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland.
