{"id":16439,"date":"2018-04-17T16:08:45","date_gmt":"2018-04-17T16:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=16439"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:31:10","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:31:10","slug":"susan-richardson-is-the-ist-pick-of-the-month-poet-for-march-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/susan-richardson-is-the-ist-pick-of-the-month-poet-for-march-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan Richardson is the IS&#038;T Pick of the Month poet for March 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At <em>Ink Sweat &amp; Tears<\/em> we normally would be less than sanguine about &#8216;Letches&#8217; receiving the honours but when this refers to Susan Richardson&#8217;s &#8216;powerful&#8217; &#8216;vivid&#8217; &#8216;amazing&#8217; poem which had such &#8216;relevance&#8217; and has been voted by you as the IS&amp;T Pick of the Month for March 2018, we can understand the response.<\/p>\n<p>Susan is living, writing and going blind in Los Angeles.\u00a0She shares a home with an Irishman, 2 pugs and 2 cats.\u00a0She was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa in 2002, and in addition to poetry, she writes a blog called<span class=\"m_7273562605394224714apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floweringink.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/floweringink.wordpress.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1519393721503000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH908qrWEIljMsqCHhxdi_46bb19g\">Stories from the Edge of Blindness.<\/a> Her work has been published in: <em>Stepping Stones Magazine, Wildflower Muse, The Furious Gazelle, The Hungry Chimera, Sheila-Na-Gig, Chantarelle\u2019s Notebook, Foxglove Journal, Literary Juice, Sick Lit Magazine, Amaryllis,<\/em> and<em> The Anapest Journal,<\/em> with pieces forthcoming in <em>Eunoia Review<\/em>.\u00a0 She was also awarded the Sheila-Na-Gig Winter Poetry Prize and will be featured in the Literary Juice 2018 Q&amp;A Series.<\/p>\n<p>Susan has asked that her \u00a310 &#8216;prize&#8217; be donated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnib.org.uk\/donations-and-fundraising\/donate-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RNIB<\/a>.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Letches<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The call to bright lights is a whisper,<\/p>\n<p>tempting souls into the clutches of<\/p>\n<p>dreams that hang on a celluloid precipice.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles turns us into letches<\/p>\n<p>who lurk under the wings of angels,<\/p>\n<p>covered in soot from generations<\/p>\n<p>of sweeping up discarded morals.<\/p>\n<p>Decrepit men, slathered in wealth,<\/p>\n<p>chase the skirts of simpering women<\/p>\n<p>with molded cheek bones and noses<\/p>\n<p>they weren\u2019t born with.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon copy blondes trample<\/p>\n<p>over the backs of comrades, and reach<\/p>\n<p>through barbed wire for a glimmer of fame.<\/p>\n<p>They come in droves and shed their skins,<\/p>\n<p>willing to do unthinkable things for<\/p>\n<p>just a drop of starlight on their tongues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*********<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Voters&#8217; comments included:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;<span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">Susan&#8217;s words paint a raw, vivid, very real picture of a world I know all too well. She gracefully articulates a place that sparkles from the outside, covering up the darkness beneath that has the power to morph something beautiful into a hideous shell of its former self. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">The imagery here is really powerful. Having lived in LA, I can totally imagine the hordes of carbon copy blondes trampling each other! Really good, cynically humorous stuff. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>Pictograph of American culture beneath cellophane.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\">I love Susan\u2019s writing and her beautiful soul. This poem hits on an interesting and less than beautiful view of life in LA.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>This poem captures 2018 Las Angeles so perfectly!<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>The poem risks making us uncomfortable and yet we must admit the truth of this tragic story for so many &#8220;starlets.&#8221;<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>Powerful images and message.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>Beautifully worded, modern and relevant<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"response-text other-item ta-response-item\"><em>Breathtaking. Though-provoking.
