{"id":16195,"date":"2018-04-26T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-04-26T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=16195"},"modified":"2018-04-03T13:39:37","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T13:39:37","slug":"christopher-hopkins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/christopher-hopkins\/","title":{"rendered":"Christopher Hopkins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salting the skin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sea becomes the colour of whale skin &amp; chalk.<br \/>\nHanging on a day,<br \/>\nabandoned by the chalk light.<\/p>\n<p>A worm moon<br \/>\nleft its portrait<br \/>\nunder the drifting ebb,<br \/>\nsketched in ridges by the salt-water whirls<br \/>\nand the endless boxing sands.<\/p>\n<p>I am looking out, with the land behind me.<br \/>\nWhere the oil works shimmers in its nightly crown<br \/>\nlike every swallowed light of the ocean<br \/>\nspeared to ground.<br \/>\nThe compact black of the sea in front of me.<br \/>\nA black hole of quiet gravity.<\/p>\n<p>I am the only light on the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Then a false phare beam<br \/>\nbreaks the hill brow to my side,<br \/>\na car\u2019s light<br \/>\nstranding me as the whale<br \/>\nsunk in the sour-dunes of dreaming.<\/p>\n<p>Every tear,<br \/>\nsalting the skin to crack,<br \/>\nunder stresses,<br \/>\nunder duress of my hidden moons,<br \/>\nmy own careless forces of gravity.<br \/>\nLike the face of the tracer moon<br \/>\nI see my light<br \/>\nto be hung<br \/>\non the broken starry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Hopkins<\/strong> grew up in Neath, South Wales during the 1970\u2019s surrounded by a landscape of machines and mountains. Christopher currently resides in the Canterbury area. His debut chapbook <em>Take Your Journeys Home<\/em> (Clare Songbirds Publishing House) has been nominated for the IPPY book award for poetry and two Pushcart Prize nominations. His second chapbook <em>The Last Time We Saw Strangers\u00a0<\/em>is due out in Spring 2018.
