{"id":15882,"date":"2018-03-24T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2018-03-24T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=15882"},"modified":"2018-02-22T16:36:38","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T16:36:38","slug":"jennie-ensor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/jennie-ensor\/","title":{"rendered":"Jennie Ensor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Thirteen Ways Of Looking At Orange<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">After Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">I<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With longing<\/p>\n<p>And sharp nails<\/p>\n<p>I consider the orange.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">II<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Five oranges perch in their little tree<\/p>\n<p>Exuding banal sweetness.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">III<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lust for orange<\/p>\n<p>Can send a woman<\/p>\n<p>Into a splendour of madness.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">IV<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Peel, moonlit on forest floor<\/p>\n<p>Thin white curls discarded<\/p>\n<p>For idiots to follow.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">V<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t look away<\/p>\n<p>From her dusky shimmer<\/p>\n<p>Those slow-opening Hot Tropic lips<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by swish<\/p>\n<p>Of falling skirt \u2013 orange, of course.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">VI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A man, a woman and an orange<\/p>\n<p>Three objects<\/p>\n<p>Eternally irreconcilable.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">VII<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They climb into orange sky<\/p>\n<p>Where steely towers grow<\/p>\n<p>And men yearn for absent gods.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">VIII<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bring me oranges<\/p>\n<p>And I will be your slave forever.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">IX<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When darkness comes<\/p>\n<p>Orange is a fleeting dream<\/p>\n<p>Beyond your grasp.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">X<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She cannot conceal her orange-flecked teeth<\/p>\n<p>As her fingers grope towards<\/p>\n<p>Another globe of pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marmalade gloats on thin white crisp.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">XI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will gather a billion billion billion oranges.<\/p>\n<p>They will fill the deepest black hole<\/p>\n<p>Shine brighter than the sun.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">XII<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Air chokes its toxic warning.<\/p>\n<p>Orange insect<\/p>\n<p>Blunders into human.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">XIII<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The last sunset<\/p>\n<p>Will be orange on steroids<\/p>\n<p>Will be laden with metaphor<\/p>\n<p>Will be remembered<\/p>\n<p>Until the last human bleats<\/p>\n<p>Echo through barren plains.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere, in another world<\/p>\n<p>An orange eye blinks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"il\">Jennie Ensor<\/span><\/strong> is an author living in north London.
