They\u2019d been at it for weeks,<\/p>\n you said, turning up unannounced<\/p>\n like carol singers at inconvenient times.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You hadn\u2019t minded at first. At least, their singing was good \u2014<\/p>\n heavenly, you described it, better than any of the choirs<\/p>\n you remembered from your childhood,<\/p>\n especially the solo tenor \u2014 out of this world.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The problem was you couldn\u2019t make them stop.<\/p>\n Instead you tried drowning them out,<\/p>\n la-la-la-ing away at the top of your voice,<\/p>\n you versus all those men.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Or if that didn\u2019t work, you\u2019d resort to the radio,<\/p>\n turning it up loud even at three in the morning \u2014<\/p>\n fortissimo<\/em> Radio 3, fortississimo<\/em> Classic FM.<\/p>\n But either they were deaf, or wouldn\u2019t take the hint.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Of course, I couldn\u2019t hear them, but you still insisted I try.<\/p>\n We sat like a couple of kids sharing a set of headphones,<\/p>\n or as we\u2019d been years ago with the wireless warming up<\/p>\n for \u201cListen with Mother\u201d again.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You wouldn\u2019t accept that the voices were all in your head.<\/p>\n They sang Land of my Fathers<\/em> in Welsh,<\/p>\n all three verses word perfectly throughout,<\/p>\n so how could it be you?
