Loch Ness Monster<\/span>

We were watching the green fireworks<\/span>
rise and fall over the Northumberland Strait<\/span>
when you told me that you didn\u2019t know<\/span>
how much time you had left. <\/span>

We were drunk at the time, and <\/span>
I left it at that. Drunk talk. It happens<\/span>
to the best of us. But now, thinking back,<\/span>
I should have listened when you told me<\/span>
that the Loch Ness Monster was hidden<\/span>
somewhere deep inside of you.<\/span>
The blackness we all have, <\/span>
but don\u2019t speak of. <\/span>

So, should I have been surprised<\/span>
when the phone rang with your mother<\/span>
on the other end, crying something<\/span>
about your blood and brains<\/span>
in a bathtub?<\/span>

On Tuesday, following your wake, <\/span>
walking down rain soaked steps<\/span>
thinking of your pale face there<\/span>
in that casket,  I wished I could have<\/span>
pushed your brains back in<\/span>
through your eyes, and drew<\/span>
with my finger, your lips<\/span>
into something the shape of a smile.<\/span>
