{"id":15566,"date":"2018-01-06T15:55:09","date_gmt":"2018-01-06T15:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=15566"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:25:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:25:56","slug":"ali-whitelock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/ali-whitelock\/","title":{"rendered":"Ali Whitelock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>the cumquats of christmas past<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">you hailed your taxi tuesday the eight\u2013\u2013<\/span><br \/>\neenth of february 2014 at four twenty seven p.m.<br \/>\ni watched it approach swerve to the kerb<br \/>\nits back doors fly open\u2013\u2013if this was death i saw it<br \/>\ncrouched behind the wheel &amp; jaded as a night<br \/>\nshift driver full of red bull &amp; no doz &amp; cheap 7\/11<br \/>\ncoffee ten thousand cigarette butts spewing<br \/>\nfrom its ashtray\u2019s filthy mouth<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">the driver bundled you in\u2013\u2013no fanfare<\/span><br \/>\nno prayers no bach cantata sung in sotto voce<br \/>\nthat might accompany you on the fresh black<br \/>\ntarmac of your new road ahead\u2013\u2013&amp; nothing<br \/>\nsoft for you to lay your head on<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">just a cracked vinyl seat stale cigarette<\/span><br \/>\nsmoke a strawberry scented christmas tree jiggling<br \/>\nlike a tea bag from the rear view mirror. i lay my<br \/>\nhand on yours leaned in whispered something like<br \/>\ni\u2019m sorry made sure your pyjama sleeves were clear<br \/>\nof the door before pressing it closed as the first<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">bubbles of fermenting sadness rose in me<\/span><br \/>\nand i forced them down like cumquats into a jar<br \/>\nfilled with brandy in preparation for christmas<br \/>\nwhich was still ten months away &amp; for weeks i kept<br \/>\ncramming till the skins of my cumquats tore<br \/>\ntheir flesh bled out &amp; you could no longer<br \/>\ntell where one cumquat ended &amp; another<br \/>\nbegan<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">&amp; when finally christmas came i half<\/span><br \/>\ndecked my halls whispered infrasonic compliments<br \/>\nof the season too low even for a passing whale hung<br \/>\nempty stockings from the mantle their gaping mouths<br \/>\nspeechless by the un-kindled fire &amp; when finally<br \/>\nlunch was served &amp; those of us left were gathered over<br \/>\nturkey &amp; ham i took my jar of preserved cumquats<br \/>\nfrom the dark of my pantry, made my way around<br \/>\nthe table &amp; heaped everyone\u2019s plate with a side of my<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 28px;\">compressed orange grief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ali Whitelock<\/strong>\u2019s poems have been published in several magazines and journals.
