A gust of wind<br \/>\nbuffets white feathers and you teeter<br \/>\nbut hold your balance, inclining<br \/>\nyour head to the water.<br \/>\nThat upturned bill you use to scythe<br \/>\nthe surface in wide arcs, has exotic<br \/>\nelegance that looks amiss among<br \/>\nthese redshanks and shelducks,<br \/>\nmore akin to the sacred ibis.<br \/>\nSo I picture you in antiquity, wading<br \/>\nbeside the slave barge of a pharaoh,<br \/>\na hieroglyph made manifest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sean\u00a0Magnus\u00a0Martin<\/strong> won the 2015 Battered Moons poetry competition.
