The people, landscapes and stories of the places she visits &#8211; and, in this case, as Bruegel imagined them -inspire her writing. Her poetry has previously appeared in <em>Ink Sweat and Tears<\/em> (November 2017).\u00a0@LaDaBel<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winter Blues Club<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tonight I&#8217;ll play slide<br \/>\nin that pine floor<br \/>\nbar down town.<br \/>\nThe sea will hurl pebbles<br \/>\non the street outside<br \/>\nand the storm will<br \/>\nhit and swing<br \/>\nthe hanging sign.<\/p>\n<p>January darkness<br \/>\nwraps a reason<br \/>\nround the flatscreens,<br \/>\nfires and hot dinners<br \/>\nof front rooms,<br \/>\nand I know the crowd<br \/>\nwill be slimmer<br \/>\nthan a Mississippi chance<br \/>\nbut, hey&#8230;<br \/>\nmy fingers need the dance.<\/p>\n<p><em>And it&#8217;s alright<\/em><br \/>\n<em>for there are stories<\/em><br \/>\n<em>to be sung,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and only a rough night &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 a night for Rojo<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 at the crossroads,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 rain on tin shacks,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 engine house hobos;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 a night for black<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0 dog harp howls &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>can stand witness<\/em><br \/>\n<em>with any wink<\/em><br \/>\n<em>of honesty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;ll forsake the fire for<br \/>\nthe pick and pull of strings,<br \/>\nthe rattle of brass or glass<br \/>\nover rosewood board,<br \/>\nwhile pebbles clatter<br \/>\nat the shaking door.<br \/>\nRobin lifts his dobro,<br \/>\nBill clears his throat,<br \/>\nno one plays Summertime<br \/>\nnot even as a joke&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marc Woodward<\/strong> is a musician and poet living in the rural West Country.
