{"id":15351,"date":"2017-12-23T09:00:19","date_gmt":"2017-12-23T09:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=15351"},"modified":"2020-12-14T11:21:38","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T11:21:38","slug":"on-the-second-day-of-christmas-we-bring-you-carole-bromley-stuart-pickford-and-pauline-rowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/on-the-second-day-of-christmas-we-bring-you-carole-bromley-stuart-pickford-and-pauline-rowe\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Second Day of Christmas we bring you Carole Bromley, Stuart Pickford and Pauline Rowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boar\u2019s Head<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We were passing through Borley<br \/>\nand I was thinking, as I changed gear<br \/>\nto go up the hill, woods either side,<br \/>\nof the wild boars that lived there<br \/>\nand gave it its name and whether<br \/>\nthere are still boars there and, if so,<br \/>\nhow big they might be and whether<br \/>\nthey have tusks and if they are shy<br \/>\nlike bears and, if they can, steer clear<br \/>\nof man and, when they sense one,<br \/>\ngallop off, cloven-hooved,<br \/>\ninto the depths of the forest.<\/p>\n<p>And I remembered Jantac<br \/>\nthat first Christmas<br \/>\nand my long pink dress<br \/>\nfrom Richard Shops and how<br \/>\nI never noticed the cold<br \/>\nas we followed the boar\u2019s head<br \/>\nacross the quad, singing that carol<br \/>\nand how sorry I felt for it,<br \/>\nits mouth stopped with an apple.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carole Bromley<\/strong> lives in York and has three books with Smith\/Doorstop, the most recent, <em>Blast Off!<\/em>, a collection for children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Present<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grey children are moving across no-man\u2019s land<br \/>\non the astro. I turn back to Alistair catching up<br \/>\nwith \u2018Lord of the Flies\u2019 coursework through lunch.<\/p>\n<p>His tanned face is smiling: Have you ever<br \/>\nbeen to Antigua or island hopping? I look out<br \/>\nat the rehearsal of the truce on the Western Front:<\/p>\n<p>During that Christmas, the Queen\u2019s Westminsters,<br \/>\nwearing top hats and with umbrellas up, cycled across<br \/>\nthe frozen sludge to the German trenches, but<\/p>\n<p>after they\u2019d exchanged gifts of Tickler\u2019s jam<br \/>\nfor schnapps\u2014or, in our case, bags of Haribo<br \/>\nand Sainsbury\u2019s commemorative chocolate bars\u2014<\/p>\n<p>they scouted the snipers\u2019 positions so next day<br \/>\nthey\u2019d be ready for when the Hun raised his head.<br \/>\nAlistair\u2019s staring at a present stuffed in the bin.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s that? he asks. A brown paper package<br \/>\ntied up in string is, in this case, just a prop,<br \/>\nI explain. There\u2019s nothing in the battered box.<\/p>\n<p>Can I have it? I shrug. As I check my diary<br \/>\nfor our next catch-up session, Alistair holds it out<br \/>\nin both hands. Sir, your Christmas present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stuart Pickford<\/strong> is the recipient of an Eric Gregory award.
