{"id":15060,"date":"2017-12-01T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T08:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=15060"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:25:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:25:56","slug":"15060","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/15060\/","title":{"rendered":"Noel Williams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The physics of hippogriffs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Horse-eagled lion \u2013 it flies because we wish it.<br \/>\nOne thing I\u2019ve never understood:<br \/>\nif, as science has it, possible worlds are infinite<br \/>\nare there more imagineable than we can imagine?<\/p>\n<p>In one, hippogriffs turn airy cartwheels, buzz<br \/>\nthe vineyard, sneak olives from their stakes<br \/>\nthen wing it over the alternative Aegean<br \/>\nto squeeze into cracks inaccessible in Parnassus,<br \/>\nclustering warm in feathered clumps of dung.<\/p>\n<p>But in another, QED, hippogriffs wear business suits<br \/>\nhost chat shows, wage war on potato blight<br \/>\nand at weekends plant plastic crosses, ankhs and knives<br \/>\nhoping for salvation.<br \/>\nCount to infinity. Add one.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere there\u2019s imaginary physics,<br \/>\na world where Einstein the Hippogriff<br \/>\ninscribes on clouds how creatures of myth<br \/>\nexceed the speed of light, glimpsed only by<br \/>\nimaginary telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noel Williams<\/strong> is co-editor of Antiphon (<a href=\"http:\/\/antiphon.org.uk\/\">antiphon.org.uk<\/a>) and associate editor of Orbis.
