THE MEDUSA EFFECT<\/span>


Seduced by our past we root beneath cliffs <\/span>
for track-ways and traces, fossilised dung.<\/span>

Mostly intact with ink-sac in place<\/span>
This was a squid long ago.<\/span>

Even soft inner parts turn into stone.<\/span>
X rays show fibres are white.<\/span>

An exhibit incised from its zone in the strata<\/span>
far from its dark sea-bed.<\/span>

DOLL IN THE CREEK<\/span>


Face down in water the colour of rust,<\/span>
a dirty pink doll in the scum.<\/span>
Sodden in mud, a placard displaying:<\/span>
              OR<\/span>
                  LE<\/span>

Re-united together after seven decades,<\/span>
the boy and the girl, the children<\/span>
whose family split.<\/span>

A grand-daughter\u2019s mission, her dream<\/span>
come true  \u2015  Party, champagne,<\/span>
local reporter, The Lot.<\/span>

The old girl weeps, hugging her brother,<\/span>
remembers his look, the feel <\/span>
and the smell of him still.<\/span>

He, obeying instructions,<\/span>
makes the right noises,<\/span>
sips his champagne and smiles.<\/span>

A film developed but blank.<\/span>
He recalls not a jot of her.<\/span>
Memory silts up.<\/span>

The doll in the creek turned round <\/span>
with a stick, has a <\/span>
permanent grin.<\/span>

Later, a drifting of currents;<\/span>
The wooden sign tilts:<\/span>
             FOR<\/span>
             SALE<\/span>
