THE ONE WITH HER<\/span>


All fires are small<\/span>
except the one with her.<\/span>
It smoldered so long,<\/span>
for years.<\/span>
It must have been<\/span>
the ground \u2013<\/span>
the cool damp sand<\/span>
the coals return to.<\/span>

Brittle white twigs,<\/span>
ashy dirty sand,<\/span>
cactus protruding<\/span>
here and there;<\/span>
the estuary<\/span>
wafts in on the night air \u2013<\/span>
that's her.<\/span>

NOCTURNE<\/span>


Sitting in the kitchen<\/span>
with, on a tablecloth,<\/span>
a notebook and a pen,<\/span>
the kitchen door key hung<\/span>
above the clean tile floor \u2013<\/span>
the dogs all bark at once<\/span>
in the outskirts.<\/span>

On the street wrought-iron<\/span>
fences guard the facades<\/span>
but even the nag is<\/span>
tied in the nearby field<\/span>
and it's not the season<\/span>
for the tropical bugs<\/span>
in the village.<\/span>

A late autumn wind blows<\/span>
down from the starless sky;<\/span>
some old women walking<\/span>
nod to the approaching<\/span>
figure with a baby<\/span>
wrapped in a bed blanket<\/span>
in their hometown.<\/span>
