INEZ <\/span>       <\/span>
  <\/span>
                          <\/span>
The first day I reached fifty two,                     <\/span>
I saw my old dad\u2019s oldest sister.<\/span>

Serrated shale the driveway<\/span>
announced my arrival, <\/span>
each step with a crunch.<\/span>
 <\/span>
I came for the viewing.                        <\/span>

An old red sedan, <\/span>
embalmed by dents, <\/span>
was left to stand<\/span>
for interment in her barn,<\/span>

a stained mausoleum <\/span>
already filled <\/span>
with the remains of other days.<\/span>

Grill hood and fender<\/span>
the car\u2019s face <\/span>
had tarnished to a pale pallor of plum grey.<\/span>

I smiled at the way<\/span>
she wanted to keep it <\/span>
and moved it into place,<\/span>
the last foot or two by hand.<\/span>

Moist hair <\/span>
a wispy veil for her eyes<\/span>
stayed in the way<\/span>

as she tried to help<\/span>
with her two pound push,<\/span>
swiping gnats away. <\/span>

I told her I could do it<\/span>
not to bother,<\/span>
I really did.<\/span>

She tried to knuckle my head<\/span>
called me silly kid<\/span>
asked me why did I bother.<\/span>

Tongue tied,<\/span>
what could I say? <\/span>
I just did.<\/span>
