{"id":14436,"date":"2017-08-17T08:00:45","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T08:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=14436"},"modified":"2017-07-22T15:39:09","modified_gmt":"2017-07-22T15:39:09","slug":"claire-sexton-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/claire-sexton-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Claire Sexton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The startle response<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In babies<br \/>\ncat whiskers<br \/>\nor a change of light<br \/>\nor firework thudding<br \/>\nfar off,<br \/>\ncan cause consternation.<\/p>\n<p>Usually people learn<br \/>\nto deflect such<br \/>\nattacks,<br \/>\nbut not always.<\/p>\n<p>In some, this nervousness<br \/>\ncontinues to rankle<br \/>\nand the tickle of cat whiskers<br \/>\ngives way to the tickle of<br \/>\nidle and malicious<br \/>\nconversations, reluctantly<br \/>\noverheard<br \/>\nin surgery waiting rooms,<br \/>\nand corridors<br \/>\nin office blocks,<br \/>\nnear water coolers<br \/>\nand in shop doorways<br \/>\nor post office queues.<\/p>\n<p>The whispers of counter staff,<br \/>\nshelf stackers,<br \/>\nlibrary patrons<br \/>\nand whistling milkmen<br \/>\ncan also cause incursions.<\/p>\n<p>And now the slightest<br \/>\ntwist or curve of my body<br \/>\nat nighttime, stirs my brain,<br \/>\nand only silence and lack of<br \/>\nmovement provide the necessary<br \/>\nalloy to make the outside world<br \/>\nless sword-like, and more<br \/>\nfluid.<\/p>\n<p>To turn emotional ground zero<br \/>\ninto something beautiful.<br \/>\nA slowly shifting black hole.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claire Sexton<\/strong> is a Welsh writer living in London.
