We've had the first snowfalls of the winter in England today, so here is an appropriate poem by Matthew Friday…<\/span>


Snow for Abbie<\/span>
 <\/span>
Abbie fizzed with excitement when<\/span>
I told her there could be snow this<\/span>
weekend, her beautiful face folding up<\/span>
into the precious smiles of childhood.<\/span>
 <\/span>
I awoke on Sunday and saw snow<\/span>
coming down in a flow, a slow water-<\/span>
fall of thick flakes that then whirled<\/span>
around like blinded birds. Everywhere<\/span>
was white and the clouds grey and stiff.<\/span>
 <\/span>
I thought of Abbie jumping out of bed,<\/span>
remembering what I said, giddy all day<\/span>
long. I saw the snow hanging in the trees;<\/span>
felt the stillness of the aftersnow, the<\/span>
hanging moment of childhood.<\/span>
 <\/span>
By the end of the afternoon the snow<\/span>
had melted and gone, leaving white stains<\/span>
and patches of beauty and the thought:<\/span>
childhood passes just as quickly.<\/span>
