It\u2019s that KWISH\u2026<\/span>

\u2026 sound of the truck\u2019s air brakes backing up snug to<\/span>
the loading dock\u2019s battered pads in the middle of the<\/span>
night.<\/span>

windshield rain<\/span>
smell of hot drip coffee<\/span>
from the thermos<\/span>

The Sign As They Likely Dashed<\/span>

At 2am it is a curious but welcome sight \u2013 seeing the<\/span>
neon OPEN lit up like that. It doesn\u2019t make sense, but<\/span>
life has been very nonsensical as of late. Still, I<\/span>
slow the car down to a sloppy pace as the windshield<\/span>
wipers furiously slap the pelting rain and try to peer<\/span>
in the massive plate-glass window with hopes of seeing<\/span>
life. For a glimmer, I see someone in there, but it\u2019s<\/span>
nothing more than a faceless shadow being obliterated<\/span>
by a flicker of lightning. No such luck. Definitely<\/span>
closed. Somebody forgot to turn off the sign as they<\/span>
likely dashed out the door with an aluminum-foil<\/span>
wrapped hot beef, rutabaga and potato pasty and<\/span>
styro-bowl of tomato-rice soup in a thick brown-paper<\/span>
bag. I can almost see the wedge of paper napkins,<\/span>
hastily grabbed, sitting on top of their late evening<\/span>
carry-home meal.<\/span>
