Grandfather Plays Polo<\/span>

 <\/span>
In his greasy jodhpurs with the batwing thighs<\/span>
Grandpa dreams of horses \u2013 we hear him snort and twitch.<\/span>
His deck-chair\u2019s tattered canvas cups his awkward frame.<\/span>

All round the garden\u2019s dreaming into June,<\/span>
a first red rose leans down,  <\/span>
white lilies cloud the air with scent,<\/span>
the iris straighten up in rows of blue.<\/span>

A cat lights on the fence, takes in the sleeping man,<\/span>
the human lap. Elastic-limbed it leaps<\/span>
and as its feet touch down on Grandpa\u2019s knees<\/span>
the old man whips up to seize an ancient polo-stick<\/span>
and swing out at the cat,<\/span>

\u201cTail-shot!\u201d he yells, \u201cChukka to the Club!\u201d<\/span>
then hands the stick to some imaginary groom.<\/span>
