Repartee under stress in Venezuela<\/span>

For Jeanie, for March 26th  2007 at Hato El Cedral<\/span>


The idea was to take advantage of good viewing in the dry season.<\/span>
How fortunate for the tourists that in the marsh of Llanos<\/span>
large areas of water then almost vanish <\/span>
herding fauna to precarious proximity. <\/span>
Scarlet ibis stride amongst the crocodiles<\/span>
anacondas slither under mud, capybaras tread with care<\/span>
and at the track\u2019s edge <\/span>
myriad caiman\u2019s eyes rise from water<\/span>
like reflective markers on a damp road.<\/span>
 <\/span>
From the truck the wet areas stand out like emeralds on parchment<\/span>
ornamented with dried cattle corpses, the cloying smell of death,<\/span>
and primal screams as  reptiles maul a mammal.<\/span>
The sun can also kill, baking mud so hard<\/span>
that a snake\u2019s refuge becomes a mausoleum.<\/span>

This is value for money, this is wildlife on demand.<\/span>
This is the stuff of poetry!<\/span>

Two hours from the ranch house, <\/span>
whilst feeding wild mangoes to domestic cows,<\/span>
the programme expanded as the wet season ruptured,<\/span>
drenching us to the bone on the open truck.  <\/span>
Dust morphed to mud then rivulets as Llanos stirred.<\/span>
Our driver raced for base, with speed a mad device <\/span>
to pass the slippery sections of the elevated route.<\/span>
Massed eyes in the water watched our crazed flight,<\/span>
the vested interest was now with them <\/span>
as we side slipped on the glistening track <\/span>
or hit hidden ruts with a spine threatening thwack<\/span>
We fled like soaked creatures dreading attack.<\/span>

Unaware that such terror was on the itinerary<\/span>
I thought to reassure my wife<\/span>
Who turned and mouthed her only commentary:<\/span>

\u201cWe\u2019re living your dream\u201d.<\/span>
