HOMEFRONT<\/span>


Better stay on your meds. Or get some.<\/span>
Otherwise how will you ignore<\/span>
the pile of hacked-off limbs on the hospital lawn,<\/span>
the amputees limping or crawling away,<\/span>
as disability permits,<\/span>
their sacrifice worse than forgotten \u2013 misremembered?<\/span>
You\u2019ll end up scribbling on napkins<\/span>
and the last remaining walls, and the scribbles,<\/span>
presuming they\u2019re discovered,<\/span>
will sound when pieced together<\/span>
like a suicide note left to mislead investigators.<\/span>
Christ, you\u2019ll end up like me,<\/span>
driving slowly over a bridge of bones,<\/span>
your face gray with exhaustion,<\/span>
while along the slatternly, post-industrial river,<\/span>
morning birds sing in the cadaverous trees.<\/span>
