Molasses & Snow<\/strong><\/p>\n

In spite of the art class On Desecration I cannot vandalize
\nbut cut out a copied inscription A une ex-Canadienne<\/p>\n

to paste above my mother\u2019s face & shoulders which rest
\non a plinth of text highlighted yellow|Such a surprise<\/p>\n

to read words I had only heard spoken|her childhood
\nmemory our favourite bed-time story|Les enfants pouss\u00e8rent<\/p>\n

les cries de joie|She and her siblings pouring the boiling syrup
\ndrop by drop into the sizzling snow|the brittle gobbets<\/p>\n

a precursor to the fudge & toffee we\u2019d die for|\u2018Molasses\u2019
\nderives from the Proto-Indo-European m\u00e9lid and cognates<\/p>\n

include the Ancient Greek \u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9 (m\u00e9li) and all those edible
\nwords like the Latin mel |Spanish melaza|and the French<\/p>\n

m\u00e9lasse\u00a0 which links to the hint of treacle in my picture
\nque la m\u00e8re Chapdelaine laissait tomber goute \u00e0 goute sur la neige<\/p>\n
