Family Portrait<\/span>


This old carrier contains the remains<\/span>
of a jumbled family jigsaw whose puzzle<\/span>
lies in the tell tale outline of vanished lives.<\/span>

A few of you went underground, lay in wait,<\/span>
until distracted hands, digging in drawers<\/span>
disinterred eyes that still could not be met.<\/span>

Time travelling back through tiny windows <\/span>
of history, even faces estranged by youth<\/span>
remain as potent as their owner's presence.<\/span>

Strange suddenly to find this platonic version of you<\/span>
surviving on untarnished in the memory of your friend.<\/span>
Here, you are eternally innocent of the people you became.<\/span>

Slower than growth, some of you are allowed to<\/span>
creep back, given temporary lodgings in shadows,<\/span>
house ghosts whom we must learn to live with.<\/span>

Words Fail<\/span>


Sometimes our language is tongue tied.<\/span>
Dictionaries are at a loss to give a definition,<\/span>
our analogies fail to find a comparison,<\/span>
even the best words are a monkey\u2019s chatter.<\/span>

Aboriginal words must have given relief.<\/span>
Unalloyed with casual use by lazy tongues,<\/span>
their violent utterance was ripped from throats<\/span>
like screams to arouse a primitive understanding.<\/span>

We need a new language, held in reserve,<\/span>
loaned to us only when events slip the<\/span>
leash of ordinary words and bolt beyond<\/span>
the reach of common understanding.<\/span>

Pristine words with distilled meaning,<\/span>
engendering a supernatural communication<\/span>
which we must use responsibly.<\/span>
Until then, there is the anti language, silence.<\/span>
