A shambles, bric-\u00e0-brac,<br \/>\nSurreptitiously changing meanings<\/p>\n<p>As time plunders and loots along<br \/>\nIts gaudy way, hooting from start to finish.<br \/>\nThey strut, preposterously, gasp, grunt<br \/>\nAnd grapple with approximations<br \/>\nStuffed into boxes that are too small<br \/>\nOr wallow in shallow waters<br \/>\nOr clatter against the bars of mindless cages.<br \/>\nSimpletons, yet our only hope.<\/p>\n<p>An occasional monument mutters and natters<br \/>\nIn memory\u2019s swamps. Words are alligators,<br \/>\nProwling semi-submerged among<br \/>\nNeurons\u2019 mangrove roots, dense, impenetrable,<br \/>\nRepetitive, tarnished, unclear.<br \/>\nSome creatures learn their way around<br \/>\nAmong the gaps, the misunderstandings,<br \/>\nThrowing words at the page<\/p>\n<p>Hoping someone will catch the re-bound<br \/>\nAnd pass them on and even help them<br \/>\nCome home again with a new suit of clothes,<br \/>\nWalking sticks, walking frames, wheelchairs,<br \/>\nProvided the sparkle still glimmers there.<br \/>\nI tinker with the search engine.<br \/>\nIt cranks up sometimes, spluttering, coughing.<br \/>\nIt takes me places, like somewhere and nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Peter Eustace<\/strong>\u00a0has published two books of poems in English and Italian (<em>Vistas<\/em>, 2006, and\u00a0<em>Weathering<\/em>, 2010) and an English-only pamphlet (<a href=\"http:\/\/erbacce-press.webeden.co.uk\/#\/peter-eustace\/4537214996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Brink<\/em><\/a>, 2009) with erbacce press, Liverpool. He has been a guest at the Valpolicella, Verona, Monte Baldo and Nogara festivals (Italy), as well as the Small Press Day\/10th anniversary of the UNESCO World Academy of Poetry, Verona. He was the featured poet in issue 45 of erbacce magazine (June 2016). Other poems have appeared on-line and in print (<em>Ink, Sweat and Tears<\/em> and <em>Equinox<\/em>).
