{"id":13704,"date":"2017-06-21T08:00:24","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T08:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=13704"},"modified":"2017-06-12T15:37:42","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T15:37:42","slug":"julie-sampson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/julie-sampson\/","title":{"rendered":"Julie Sampson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As we climbed the slope<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>we&#8217;ve followed the route of the old stone wall<br \/>\ndappled light&#8217;s playing tricks of blue on bells<br \/>\nthen shaping and sharing our way<br \/>\nas it shades upwards over cobbled-path&#8217;s<br \/>\ncurves; a scatter of white flowers<br \/>\nlines the path, as shattered bone.<\/p>\n<p>Just right of the lych-gate<br \/>\nat\u00a0 the summit of long Pilgrim&#8217;s Avenue<br \/>\nbelow the site of Okehampton&#8217;s Saxon church,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s the black-hole of a badger&#8217;s set<br \/>\nand its over-stitched white garlic spread.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ve stumbled on a place of crossings.<br \/>\nFamily labyrinths are running beneath and across<br \/>\nthis graveyard&#8217;s Styx. Badger is Charon,<br \/>\ngrave plunderer, under-<br \/>\nground ferryman.<\/p>\n<p>Other lives, signs of roots&#8217; growth rituals<br \/>\nspread, like lichen<br \/>\non our Harris slab.<br \/>\nStones have toppled; one<br \/>\nis ours; she&#8217;s covered with<br \/>\npretty stitchwort, pennywort,<br \/>\ncreeping moss.<\/p>\n<p>In the undergrowth beside the set<br \/>\nwhere badger cubs sleep<br \/>\nthe genetic threads of family<br \/>\nweave with the thriving microbial community &#8211;<br \/>\nskeletons&#8217; hosting<br \/>\nmoles, earthworms &#8211;<br \/>\ndelicate the little-springtail.<\/p>\n<p><em>i.m.
