Another Endless January <\/span>

Another endless January, wasted<\/span>
with drinking binges<\/span>
and the rattled hinges<\/span>
of doors that never open<\/span>
on eyes that never close,<\/span>
but sink, deep beneath<\/span>
patchwork sheets<\/span>
of fading blue and faded green,<\/span>
into the horror of a dream:<\/span>
hotel rooms and bingo halls,<\/span>
heart shaped clouds and snakes,<\/span>
bottled up with February<\/span>
(like everything of you in me)<\/span>
eating themselves into a hole<\/span>
of self-obsession,<\/span>
self-annihilation.<\/span>

January is nothing<\/span>
but planned depression<\/span>
with moments missing, lost<\/span>
in lightless days <\/span>
of jealousy and greed<\/span>
and then starvation\u2013 <\/span>
of the body, of the mind\u2013  <\/span>
escapism of any kind;<\/span>
and forced regrets, too hard to forget,<\/span>
too easy to remember,<\/span>
like steamed up windows <\/span>
on the Fourteenth of November.<\/span>

My year begins in September<\/span>
when the streetlights glow<\/span>
a pinkish red,<\/span>
when the leaves are falling<\/span>
but they haven\u2019t fallen yet.<\/span>
