Everything tumbles together, syringa<\/p>\n

in bloom, sweet clover on the air,<\/span><\/p>\n

the earth\u2019s breath between showers,<\/p>\n

bitterns poised to strike unwary fish<\/span><\/p>\n

who abandon their granite posts<\/p>\n

with staccato QUAWKQuawkquawks!<\/span><\/p>\n

when I come too close;<\/p>\n

muskrat who ignores me<\/span><\/p>\n

as she parts the water with her nose,<\/p>\n

twigs for her den in her teeth;<\/span><\/p>\n

and hissing snapper with jaws<\/p>\n

even death respects<\/span><\/p>\n

who slides into tall grass<\/p>\n

that trembles at his passage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not far from this suburban edge<\/p>\n

semis from Quebec roll by<\/span><\/p>\n

with cargoes of furs, blocks of ice,<\/p>\n

cedar sprays, antlers, Eskimo songs<\/span><\/p>\n

and shrieks of children from farthest north<\/p>\n

where they fence small squares of sky<\/span><\/p>\n

from wilderness and polar bears. I want<\/p>\n

to link all these in a causal chain,<\/span><\/p>\n

as though I am he<\/em> who knows, weighs, <\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 values, names\u2014<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

but only this moment by moment teeming<\/p>\n

answers my hunger for sense.<\/span><\/p>\n
