{"id":1323,"date":"2008-08-01T08:17:50","date_gmt":"2008-08-01T08:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=1323"},"modified":"2008-08-01T08:17:50","modified_gmt":"2008-08-01T08:17:50","slug":"kara-sue-deserves-something-better-says-chelsey-flood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/kara-sue-deserves-something-better-says-chelsey-flood\/","title":{"rendered":"Kara-Sue deserves something better &#8211; says Chelsey Flood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Kara-Sue, You Deserve Better Things <\/span><\/p>\n<p>We bonded over broken bones,<br \/>displayed our wounds<br \/>at check out number seven.<\/p>\n<p>Her namebadge said Kara-Sue<br \/>and I thought it unfair<br \/>only she had one,<br \/>but I didn&#39;t say my name.<br \/>There wasn&#39;t really time.<br \/>An old man scowled<br \/>behind us<br \/>stinking of rank flannel<br \/>sending out his bitterness.<\/p>\n<p>I saw Kara-Sue <br \/>unloading tins of sweetcorn<br \/>with the delicate hand<br \/>that hadn&#39;t recently been stood on<br \/>by a horse. <br \/>I grinned and she waved, <br \/>showed me her braces <br \/>and enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday she was on the deli,<br \/>a plastic glove on her good hand.<br \/>She told me about her allergies<br \/>and I winced,<br \/>Red meat, chicken and vegetables<br \/>and you work in here?<br \/>I apologised for the p\u00e2t\u00e9<br \/>she was that moment<br \/>spatuling from its trough.<\/p>\n<p>An old lady bristled<br \/>at our chatter<br \/>and I hurried it along,<br \/>thinking<br \/>Kara-Sue, you deserve better things.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my <br \/>brown bread and skimmed milk,<br \/>paid for it quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Kara-Sue sitting at the check out<br \/>wearing her name badge <br \/>Calmly.<\/p>\n<p>I want to rip it off.<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;m terrified I will watch her get old<br \/>like I watched Sally get old<br \/>on <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Home and Away<\/span>,<br \/>gradually,<br \/>day by day<\/p>\n<p>I want to tell her to get up.<br \/>To go! Quick! While she can<br \/>but I suspect I&#39;m being irrational<br \/>(where irrational<br \/>means the truth<br \/>too loudly.)<br \/>so I smile instead<br \/>and ask her boring questions.<br \/>I play along.<\/p>\n<p>I buy my brown bread<br \/>and skimmed milk<br \/>quietly.<br \/>Don&#39;t take up too much time<br \/>or scream at staff to leave.<\/p>\n<p>I wave goodbye to Kara-Sue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Chelsey Flood lives in Cornwall, England.
