{"id":13154,"date":"2017-01-27T09:00:32","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T09:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=13154"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:26:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:26:33","slug":"thomas-orszag-land-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/thomas-orszag-land-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Orsz\u00e1g-Land"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Stones of Jerusalem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Arrival\u00a0 &amp; Departure <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013In memoriam<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Gy\u00f6rgy Tim\u00e1r<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oblivious to his grandson \u2013 a gift! \u2013<br \/>\nabsorbed in a birthday book,<\/p>\n<p>my timorous brother lifted his eyes<br \/>\nto the Mediterranean sky.<\/p>\n<p>The stench of burning human flesh<br \/>\neternally clung to his own.<\/p>\n<p>Persistent hunger whipped him crazy.<br \/>\nThe death he\u2019d escaped filled his life.<\/p>\n<p>He clenched and raised his fist towards<br \/>\na distant, friendly sky:<\/p>\n<p><em>For Your own sake,\u00a0my Lord, I take,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I take\u2026\u00a0You do not exist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Heirloom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My father taught me to die,<br \/>\nwhen I must, like a human being.<br \/>\nMy mother taught me to trust<br \/>\nand sing like a human being.<\/p>\n<p>And a boy and a king, alone<br \/>\nwith a stone, a sling and a harp<br \/>\nhas left me the\u00a0chutzpah\u00a0to try<\/p>\n<p>to hone and sharpen and fling<br \/>\neach thought and word and line<br \/>\nbeyond the confines of time<br \/>\nthat bind a human being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A Feast in the Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 For George Konr\u00e1d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Worried, what with his women and walls and wealth,<br \/>\npoor Solomon wisely bade a scribe to describe<br \/>\nthe lofty lifting \u2013 like the sun \u2013 of depression.<br \/>\nA bestseller from the past!&#8230; well worth a review.<\/p>\n<p>A wretched start:\u00a0<em>There\u2019s nothing new under the sun.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The women are fickle. The flowers bow to every wind.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The men are tyrants or servants or fools, and even<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I might die \u2013 outrageously under the sun.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u2026Even the women will, and the flowers, and you.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>These walls might crumble in time. We must return<\/em><br \/>\n<em>into being dust or rain or hillside or thunder,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>whatever our desires under the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How dreadful.\u00a0S<em>till, this hour is mine, while it lasts,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>enough to complete my poem among the flowers<\/em><br \/>\n<em>rejoicing in my loves and our never recurring<\/em><br \/>\n<em>lives as human beings under the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>At the Press Club<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nYou\u2019re here to feed your pension and tension.<br \/>\nI\u2019m chasing a soaring bird \u2013 the truth.<br \/>\nWe are not even friendly rivals.<br \/>\nI covet neither your fancy title<br \/>\nnor your impressive, official hat.<br \/>\nI am a writer.
