She concentrates<br \/>\non keeping the felt tip within the lines<\/p>\n<p>colouring the tiny fairy lights on the Christmas tree<br \/>\nand I carry on reading the bedtime story.<\/p>\n<p>Your dyslexic mind understands words<br \/>\nlike damascene but can&#8217;t read them on the page.<\/p>\n<p>I was always hiding in books, hiding from things<br \/>\nmy nine year-old self could not yet begin to comprehend<\/p>\n<p>and I learned from reading.<br \/>\nWatership Down taught me about survival<\/p>\n<p>that strength and resilience can be found<br \/>\nin the unlikely of places. I watch you, my children<\/p>\n<p>learning the hard way, chipping away at words<br \/>\nlike little birds trapped under the ice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Burns<\/strong> is a poet and playwright living in the north-east and published widely in literary magazines including <em>South, Brittle Star, Ambit, Obsessed with Pipework<\/em> and<em> The Interpreter&#8217;s House<\/em>. In 2016 she won second place in The Writers&#8217;&amp;Artists&#8217; sonnet competition judged by Ruth Padel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ice has shifted<br \/>\nopened up a hole.<br \/>\nGlass hangs heavy<br \/>\nfrom the rooftops.<br \/>\nSmall feet skate<br \/>\nin circles of time<br \/>\nas Siberian winds<br \/>\ndescend, freeze<br \/>\nthe edges of snow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sue Wallace-Shaddad<\/strong> now concentrates on writing poetry after a long career with the British Council.
