Sibyl Ruth) and Debbie Strange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smugglers<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>in memory of Frau L.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This blanket of dark; perfect conditions<br \/>\nfor our latest trip to the siding together.<br \/>\nA woman can\u2019t see what\u2019s next to her nose<br \/>\nas we clamber down, clutching bags and each other<br \/>\nby the elbow. Mind out,<br \/>\nit can\u2019t be far from here. Shush.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s the pump. Our luck\u2019s in alright:<br \/>\nwe missed it by that much\u2026.<br \/>\nMove on again. Ducking and diving.<br \/>\nThat stretch of cobbles<br \/>\nand then the passage. It\u2019s lit up for once.<br \/>\nNow we inch along the middle<br \/>\nof the road, feeling our way forward<br \/>\nstep by cautious step<br \/>\ntill we reach the brewhouse by the gate.<br \/>\nWill the guards be asleep yet?<br \/>\nBetter hang fire. See how the land lies.<br \/>\nOh hell! Here comes the thunder<br \/>\nof great big boots. If we\u2019re spotted,<br \/>\nlet\u2019s say we just fancied a little saunter.<br \/>\nFinally the coast\u2019s clear<br \/>\nand we\u2019re at it without wasting a second.<br \/>\nAlready our bags are half-full<br \/>\nwhen a sudden door swings open.<br \/>\nPure deadly light leaps out<br \/>\nall round us and we\u2019re done for.<br \/>\nHearts pounding in our throats, we run<br \/>\nfor it. The game\u2019s well and truly over<br \/>\nunless&#8230; Could there be extra time?<br \/>\nThank God \u2013 it seems that no one\u2019s spotted us.<br \/>\nShould we be content to slope away<br \/>\nwith our bags half-empty? Don\u2019t be ridiculous!<br \/>\nWe\u2019re getting straight back to work.<br \/>\nA Berlin girl doesn\u2019t admit defeat.<br \/>\nShe stands firm, sticks to her guns<br \/>\nand never surrenders. We shall not retreat.<br \/>\nTaking new heart, we edge up a second time<br \/>\n(isn\u2019t Fortune supposed to favour<br \/>\nthe brave?) towards Coal Mountain<br \/>\nthat magic jewel-heap. And there we savour<br \/>\nvictory, stuffing our sacks right<br \/>\nto the brim with hard-won treasure. Such<br \/>\nheavy riches. Staggering, arms almost breaking<br \/>\nwith the sheer weight of our catch,<br \/>\nwe reel home. Where everyone\u2019s gobsmacked<br \/>\nto see the glorious loot that we\u2019ve brought back.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rose Scooler<\/strong> (1881-1985) was a German Jew, whose early life was one of privilege and material comfort. She wrote this poem during the winter of 1944-5, while a slave labourer in Theresienstadt<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sibyl Ruth<\/strong> is Rose Scooler\u2019s great-niece.
