the hole in the universe<\/span>


today i read in the newspaper<\/span>
that scientists have discovered <\/span>
6 billion trillion miles of emptiness <\/span>
out in space & how they are puzzled<\/span>
by the whole thing<\/span>
while i sit with a cigarette in hand<\/span>
looking up at the dark sky<\/span>
sending my meek smoke signals <\/span>
up into the blackness<\/span>
smiling, unbaffled by their new finding<\/span>
knowing all along god was out there somewhere<\/span>
& now it is late august <\/span>
all i hear are crickets & the box fan<\/span>
& i am pleased by this too<\/span>
these surrounding sounds void of language <\/span>
these god-like chips of meaningless waves<\/span>
