West End<\/span>


People huddle in doorways,<\/span>
sharing cigarettes and stories,<\/span>
hugging themselves<\/span>
against the frost, the city and the evening light.<\/span>

Alone as they find that<\/span>
they share the same favourites.<\/span>
Alone as they struggle<\/span>
to find the right laugh to wear.<\/span>

A few hours later,<\/span>
with a lump in his throat,<\/span>
while rattling home<\/span>
at the back of a night-smothered train;<\/span>

Remembering her<\/span>
in the glare of the window,<\/span>
he wondered if she<\/span>
had listened to a word he said.<\/span>
