Brother of the Sea<\/span>

Lake Erie \u2013 blue water and sky become one. I sit in the sand not far <\/span>
from the place along the channel where my father and I used to fish. <\/span>
The beach is smaller now, cluttered with garbage cans and signs. <\/span>
The driftwood too, scattered along the edge, entangled with leaves and <\/span>
plastic bottles. <\/span>

The gulls return again and again to the edge of the pier as they did <\/span>
when we cast our lines. My father would tell the same story every time I <\/span>
was bored. The Iroquois, a confederation of five nations \u2013 Seneca, <\/span><\/span>
Cayuga, Onodaga, Oneida, Mohawk \u2013 defeat the Eries\u2026<\/span>


I remember our bobbers rocking back and forth in these waters \u2013<\/span>

the only legacy that bears their name.<\/span>
