{"id":12471,"date":"2017-02-26T09:00:15","date_gmt":"2017-02-26T09:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=12471"},"modified":"2020-12-09T15:26:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T15:26:17","slug":"miranda-yates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/miranda-yates\/","title":{"rendered":"Miranda Yates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Damp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The damp that squats in gritstone hearts of two-bed terraces.<br \/>\nThe stumble of rooftops polished dark as funeral brogues.<br \/>\nThe promiscuity of green, having its way with every crack<br \/>\nand hole, every startled moss that punks from rock and stump.<\/p>\n<p>And the mushrooms, stained and freckled uglies<br \/>\nsacking off school to lurk in woodland, to squat on tree trunks;<br \/>\nand the river\u2019s soft bloat; a run off of the great original swell<br \/>\nfor adventure, for deep zephyr-lunged and salty elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Then the clods and clumps and thickets in racing, office and tea,<br \/>\nsap and dogged hunter, pale myrtle and spotty verdigris.<br \/>\nThe rotten luck that sets in for good, the fool\u2019s errands<br \/>\nthrough the dank and drear; the endless lessons in renewal.<\/p>\n<p>And the lichens that attach themselves to lonely places,<br \/>\nunworldly vagrants born of thin air and exposure.<br \/>\nThe let-down of kindling giving like Jaffa cakes.<br \/>\nas you kick up the wet leaves of the calendar, dog in tow.<\/p>\n<p>Now look, there\u2019s me in my middle-twenties,<br \/>\non the long walk home in the rain after closing.<br \/>\nThe streetlamps are doffing their concrete caps<br \/>\nas if the elements had ever taken a blind bit of notice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miranda Yates<\/strong> lives in Manchester where she is a primary teacher.
