Its queue-badgering ghost<br \/>\nmust shake the iron-ribbed ceiling<\/p>\n<p>of Leeds train station, the student<br \/>\ndives, places words choose to fester<br \/>\nunder the skin. Plates of ice barge<br \/>\nthe Ouse; two gulls ride convections<\/p>\n<p>of air, mewing like remnant heralds<br \/>\nof some old Norse saga. The heart<br \/>\nbrims over. Incongruity is shorn<br \/>\nof terror; hobby Vikings at Costa<\/p>\n<p>warm their close-braided cheeks<br \/>\nwith the cups. Malebisse sounds<br \/>\nlike morning mist, halitosis low<br \/>\nover the stray, the derangement<\/p>\n<p>of light so that there comes easy<br \/>\nto the imagination some deity \u2013<br \/>\nits immense hands over us \u2013<br \/>\nbending light pink and green<\/p>\n<p>(though whether in design loving<br \/>\nor unloving impossible to say).<br \/>\nConscience, we might well think,<br \/>\nis a kind of bad debt. Shake it off.<\/p>\n<p>Heap ashes on it. To conclude<br \/>\nthis weekend\u2019s jolly, Clifford\u2019s<br \/>\ntower burns again. Illuminations<br \/>\nlave the cold stone face, sparks<\/p>\n<p>streaming down gilt-golden like<br \/>\nhyperactive tears; and afterward,<br \/>\na girning skull vomiting smoke,<br \/>\nlobotomised. All applaud.<\/p>\n<p>What can steel in us remembrance<br \/>\nof the freezing blade on shoulder<br \/>\n-blade, fear\u2019s stone-encircled echo<br \/>\nand fire: its hunger, sad, satiable?<\/p>\n<p>What can render love at its limits,<br \/>\nreal sexual love, hounded by hate;<br \/>\nand in that northern walpurgisnacht,<br \/>\ntrue horror of their final non-choice?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karl O&#8217;Hanlon<\/strong> grew up near Purdsyburn.
