{"id":12350,"date":"2017-01-14T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2017-01-14T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=12350"},"modified":"2016-10-31T10:37:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-31T10:37:47","slug":"john-short","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/john-short\/","title":{"rendered":"John Short"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>When We Were Occultists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the days when we were occultists<br \/>\nwe were dazzled by symbolism,<br \/>\nnumerology and arcane language.<br \/>\nWe\u2019d spend an afternoon sniffing ether<br \/>\nbecause that was what Crowley did<br \/>\nand you could buy it over the counter<br \/>\nin the chemist shops of Gascony.<\/p>\n<p>In the days when we were occultists<br \/>\nwe\u2019d draw magic circles in chalk<br \/>\non the floorboards of the dining room<br \/>\nunder the massive fireplace,<br \/>\nhunt around for daggers and candlesticks<br \/>\nor produce our own robes, though<br \/>\nwe were not seamstresses.<\/p>\n<p>Those days long ago when it seemed<br \/>\nas if everyone was an occultist<br \/>\nwe\u2019d sit under that rustic fireplace<br \/>\ncarving wands of hazel and sycamore;<br \/>\nbranches cut from a tree at dawn<br \/>\nand the wizards of Gascony<br \/>\nwould pass by and approve.<\/p>\n<p>Those strange gnarled folk who held<br \/>\nmeetings in the forest, the nights<br \/>\nwhen we were all occultists<br \/>\ntracing pentagrams in the air<br \/>\ntaking every cat or raven seriously<br \/>\nand purging our auras with blasts<br \/>\nof liquid astral fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Short<\/strong> was born in Liverpool and studied comparative religion at Leeds University before spending some years in southern Europe.
