Plus clothes<br \/>\nyou don\u2019t mind ruined.<br \/>\nFixers, they don\u2019t wash out.<br \/>\nThe smell will get you,<br \/>\nbut not of death. More chemicals<br \/>\nlike wax and rubber.\u201d<br \/>\nBut my mother, being my mother<br \/>\ndidn\u2019t seem to mind.<br \/>\nWalked right up to the<br \/>\nplastic head,<br \/>\nstuck her hand inside.<br \/>\n\u201cYou won\u2019t even know<br \/>\nI\u2019m here,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nPulled on a dark-blue lab coat.<br \/>\nWatched closely<br \/>\nas I unzipped the body bag,<br \/>\nrevealed cavities and cages.<br \/>\nStood on tiptoes to peer inside,<br \/>\nscribbled in her notebook.<br \/>\nSo I placed a stool<br \/>\nthree feet away;<br \/>\nher territory and mine.<br \/>\nWhen the students filed in<br \/>\nthey looked at her,<br \/>\nthe older woman with colourful shoes.<br \/>\nWhilst I quizzed the students,<br \/>\nshe daubed her paints.<br \/>\nAt the end they crowded round her.<br \/>\nAdmired her line and<br \/>\nbrave use of colour<br \/>\nwhilst I put the organs back.<br \/>\nAs the students left<br \/>\nshe called out to them.<br \/>\n\u201cCall me Poppy!\u201d she cried.<br \/>\nThey waved from the door.<br \/>\n\u201cWeren\u2019t they interesting?<br \/>\nWhat a wonderful body,<br \/>\nall those nooks and crannies.\u201d<br \/>\nI slung the heart in a plastic bag.<br \/>\nLooked at my watch<br \/>\nbefore herding her out.<br \/>\nThen as we went to the door<br \/>\nshe turned round and said,<br \/>\n\u201cShall we say the same time next week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eliot North<\/strong> is a doctor, educator and writer who lives and works in the North East.
