The Ferry <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">The child on his father\u2019s lap<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">reaches out, touches the water.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">He trails a finger, sucks it.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">It tastes of old rain, he says.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">It tastes of not the sea, deep,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">slowness, town scouts fingers.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-weight: bold;\">2. Ruskin\u2019s Ice House Overlooking the Lake<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-weight: bold;\">(Brantswood)<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">A cell carved from the cliff\u2019s flank,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">he could sit here to cool his head,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">as a world races to melting point.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">There is a comfort in dark days,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">the ease of keeping what is.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">He prefers winter; he knows<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">that a mountain can hold ice,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">can school water in stillness,<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">can reflect the nature of cold.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">* Coniston is the glacially formed lake where Donald Campbell died attempting the world speed record on water. Ruskin the well known nineteenth century art critic and social theorist moved to live in a house overlooking the lake. He suffered all his life from severe bouts of depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <\/span><\/font><font style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\" size=\"2\">Andrea Porter is a member of the poetry performance group Joy of Six<br \/>\nthat&nbsp;has performed in&nbsp;Britain and New York. She has been published in a<br \/>\nnumber of poetry magazines (both paper and online) in the UK , Canada ,<br \/>\nAustralia and USA . Her narrative sequence of poems <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Bubble<\/span><br \/>\nwas adapted for Radio 4 as a drama by the RSC playwrite Fraser Grace.<br \/>\nShe received an Escalator Award from the British Arts Council (East)<br \/>\nand The New Writing Partnership in 2006 to complete a novel.
