\nLate afternoon already, as we drop
\ndown the unmetalled track to find the house;
\nwatch the light slip from the day\u2019s shoulders
\nwhile we unpack and settle, make the tea.<\/p>\n
\nthe combe, listen for the wish of gravel,
\nfeel for the slip of mud at the path\u2019s edge,
\nfollow the rings of the torch\u2019s dim ellipse.<\/p>\n
\nthe ribs of a nave as we process,
\npast the cry of a tawny owl, a crumbling barn
\nand three gates with their different latches.<\/p>\n
\nand you say \u2018go on, count them!\u2019
\nYou cut a piece of the sky\u2019s dark cloth
\nand lay it round me, kiss me with a smuggler\u2019s tongue.<\/p>\n
\nthe echo of the waves against the trees.
\nNext day we find the drop is sheer, the pebbles
\nwe heard rolling in the surf are big as cats.<\/p>\n
