{"id":10987,"date":"2016-06-03T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T08:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=10987"},"modified":"2016-05-24T10:30:53","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T10:30:53","slug":"ed-higgin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/ed-higgin\/","title":{"rendered":"Ed Higgins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning to Drive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just take the mountain curves<br \/>\nas tightly to the inside and<\/p>\n<p>as fast as surface conditions permit<br \/>\nand the road\u2019s edge<\/p>\n<p>or yellow center line allow<br \/>\nmy father was saying,<\/p>\n<p>concentrating on my desire to learn<br \/>\nall the secrets of driving.<\/p>\n<p>What he meant to tell me,<br \/>\nor so I imagine, was stay alert,<\/p>\n<p>that all roads take caution, pose<br \/>\non-coming lessons, deep curves<\/p>\n<p>impossible to anticipate at any age.<br \/>\nThe easy lesson wound down Woodside Road<\/p>\n<p>toward home that summer I was sixteen.<br \/>\nThe roads coming made you drive straighter,<\/p>\n<p>beyond anything you could think you wanted,<br \/>\nsometimes away from wherever you intended to go.<\/p>\n<p>Even as you sometimes thrilled<br \/>\nto their terrible ride.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ed Higgins<\/strong>&#8216; poems and short fiction have appeared in various print and online journals including: <em>Monkeybicycle, Tattoo Highway, Triggerfish Critical Review, Word Riot<\/em>, and <em>Blue Print Review,<\/em> among others.
