{"id":10893,"date":"2016-05-19T08:00:58","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T08:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=10893"},"modified":"2016-04-25T17:30:23","modified_gmt":"2016-04-25T17:30:23","slug":"ian-humphreys-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/ian-humphreys-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ian Humphreys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>breathless<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>graffiti shouts insults from walls by the chemist<br \/>\nits colours explode like flung bottles<\/p>\n<p>I stare at the pavement and I\u2019m late for the 8:22<br \/>\nto Manchester because I should have left home at 7:55<\/p>\n<p>but I had to fix the tap or attempt to and now<br \/>\nif I run I could pratfall like last time and hurt<\/p>\n<p>my coccyx and rip my trousers and Annie from sales<br \/>\nwill cluck over me at lunch and her breath smells<\/p>\n<p>of liquorice and I just want to sit quietly at my desk<br \/>\nand not bother with chit-chat and it\u2019s now 8:17<\/p>\n<p>and there\u2019s no time to order coffee<br \/>\nfrom the man who grunts or grab a gloompaper<\/p>\n<p>for company on the journey and I need something<br \/>\nto occupy my mind because if I don\u2019t it ticks<\/p>\n<p>like a wind-up alarm clock and prick-prick-pricks<br \/>\nthe inside of my skull<\/p>\n<p>and the train\u2019s pulling in now and I\u2019m queuing politely<br \/>\nwhen some idiot pushes past and I smile<\/p>\n<p>and I\u2019m getting on and I\u2019m looking round<br \/>\nfor an empty seat like that exists at rush hour<\/p>\n<p>and I\u2019m squashed against a woman with a pushchair<br \/>\nand my head weighs watermelon fat<\/p>\n<p>and who brings a child on a crowded train at this time of day<br \/>\nand I pretend not to notice her or the kid<\/p>\n<p>but I see the strap of my bag is caught<br \/>\nin the wheels of the buggy and my inner-Tannoy says<\/p>\n<p>they\u2019re getting off at the next stop<br \/>\nthey\u2019re getting off at the next stop<\/p>\n<p>and I brace myself to leave with them to avoid a scene<br \/>\nthen jump back onto the next carriage along<\/p>\n<p>so no one will spot me re-embarking<br \/>\nas they may determine I\u2019m acting suspiciously<\/p>\n<p>and use mobile devices to alert the authorities<br \/>\nand guards at Stockport might actually<\/p>\n<p>escort me off the train in front of all these people<br \/>\nand what will Annie think<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian Humphreys<\/strong> is studying for a Creative Writing MA at MMU.
