{"id":10505,"date":"2016-04-19T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T08:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=10505"},"modified":"2016-03-29T12:34:21","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T12:34:21","slug":"martin-malone-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/martin-malone-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin Malone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Map-Making<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You live close to this land,<br \/>\nmap its contours as surely<br \/>\nas your body\u2019s own:<br \/>\nsecret parting of valley lips,<br \/>\narterial push of river into tide,<br \/>\nthe sticky rill of your own still water.<\/p>\n<p>Some days you plot another\u2019s country,<br \/>\ntheir muscle and bone becoming yours<br \/>\nin the close-ribbed cabin<br \/>\nthat domiciles a heart.<br \/>\nAnd always, after dark,<br \/>\nyou strip his night to its secret,<br \/>\nclaim the ground as your estate<br \/>\nbefore bringing yourself to a trust,<br \/>\nthat never quite comes.<\/p>\n<p>Here, inscribe my shoulder\u2019s span<br \/>\nwhile I etch the gravity of your waist,<br \/>\neach ink as black as the other\u2019s,<br \/>\nthe survey essential to both.<br \/>\nCartographers then,<br \/>\nlet us share our dismal craft.<br \/>\nWe live close to this land,<br \/>\nunmap its contours as surely<br \/>\nas our own: its occult<br \/>\ndebris and dead ends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Born in County Durham, <strong>Martin Malone<\/strong> now lives in Scotland. He has published two poetry collections: <em>The Waiting Hillside<\/em> (Templar, 2011) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoestring-press.com\/2015\/09\/cur\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cur<\/em> <\/a>(Shoestring, 2015). An Honorary Research Fellow in Creative Writing at Aberdeen University, he is currently studying for a Ph.D in poetry at Sheffield University.
